A Word From The President |

June is here and old car season is in full swing. The car shows are running hot and heavy. If you want, you can find a car show every Saturday and Sunday and cruise-ins two or three times a week. With the focus on car shows, last month we had our meeting at the Saratoga Car Show (by the way, a really good car show), and this month we will be meeting at the Car Show at Hildene. For anyone who has not been to Hildene, the car show there is great. They generally have seven to eight hundred cars. GM, Ford, Mopar, independents, brass, early, late, trucks, street-rods, you name it, and yes there is a Corvair class that turns out a good number of cars from all over the northeast. The show runs on Saturday (June 14th) and Sunday (June 15th). We will have our meeting Sunday at Walt and Jean Newell’s trailer, in the swap meet area. This show is worth the effort, so bring your Corvair, and if you can’t bring your Corvair then just come and look, there is plenty to see. Peter Callesano has been in touch with the owners of P.J.’s Barbeque, and has made arrangements for a “CORVAIR” night. This has to be a Friday night, and all we have to do is get five or six Corvairs together with some people who like chicken barbeque (you can count me in) and let Peter know when we can make it. I would hate to see a chance like this get away so let’s call Peter (584-9306) and get this rolling. Last month, in the in the newsletter we printed a coupon for ten dollars off a new CORSA membership. For all of you who are not now members of CORSA, I hope you take advantage of this opportunity and join. This is a fine organization and it helps keep people interested in the corvair. With the coupon you can try a one year membership for just twenty-five dollars and the monthly magazine (“CORSA COMMUNIQUE”) alone, is well worth that. So do yourself a favor and join today! Well that’s it for now. Hope to see you at Hildede. ‘Til then, remember keep the shiny side up. |

Do you have hobbies? I guess our Corvairs are our hobbies (that's a given) but do you have other hobbies? Better yet, do you know anybody who doesn't? I do and, in my opinion, they are weird. They are consumers, plain and simple. They collect nothing, well at least nothing in the collection sense. They have their mementos, pictures of children and trips, nice decorations around the house, a small collection of Hummel figurines in a (mostly inherited and gifts from others) but they collect, build, or for that matter do nothing. They are always on the go, buying something, shopping for something, going somewhere. The closest they have to a hobby is shopping. They do seem a gregarious sort however, if only to show off their latest bargain. My interactions with them are usually cordial, but somewhat awkward. Conversations With them are usually on the most basic level. Typically they go somewhat like this; THEM: "Hi Ray, did you see the cute sign the kids got us for our pool at the tulip festival?" ME: "Oh, that's cute." THEM: "What do you think they paid for it?" ME: (being generous) "Don't know, fifteen dollars?' THEM: (with excitement) "NINE DOLLARS! Can you believe it! Isn't it the cutest thing." (Door bell rings new people enter and rescue me.) THEM: "Oh hi so and so, come see the sign the kids bought me for our pool..." and so it goes. On and on about a little hand painted sign cutely telling swimmers not to pee in the pool. Why am I bringing this up? Well I notice my son is developing the skill of having no hobbies. Therefore I've taken it upon myself to get him interested in something, not just a lot of nothing. It must be something inborn into the individual. I never needed someone to coax a hobby out of me, it just came naturally. I'll have to cultivate that in him. My daughter, on the other hand, no problem. Speaking of hobbies, you all gotta try running your Corvairs at Lime Rock or some other NECC event. They are great! If you are going to the National in Carlisle this July, go early and attend the NECC track day at Summit Point Raceway. SERIOUSLY! All you need are seat belts, a Snell certified helmet, a car in good working order and the courage to have some of the most fun you may ever experience. Check the competition rules and if anybody wants to do it (Bruce or I can help) .then by all means go and do it. You will see some wonderful cars (and beaters too) great drivers (and novices) and people having fun, fun, fun. You don't need a racer, just the will to do it. I cannot encourage it enough. Unfortunately Lime Rock, the closest event, is all filled this year. If you do not have the courage to go to Summit this year, then plan and prepare for Lime Rock next year. It's definitely worth the experience. What more can I say, unless the thought of a new sign for your pool sounds more exciting.
