The 2004 WMCC Car Display was held on Saturday,
August 7 as part of the Red Barns Spectacular at the Gilmore Car
Museum in Hickory Corners, Michigan. The day started out cool
but it eventually warmed up and it turned out to be a beautiful day.
This year we had 32 Corvairs on the show field (there would have
been 33 but one of the cars was locked in a trailer with the keys to
the trailer in Indiana). Every body style was represented
except for the sedan. Clyde Stanton even drove his UltraVan,
which was the hit of the show.
Also part of the festivities was the 30th
anniversary celebration of the West Michigan Corvair Club. We
recognized our charter members who were in attendance, John Shipman
and Clyde Stanton, and thanked them for their dedication to the club
over the years.
After everyone had their fill of lunch and
anniversary cake, the people's choice awards were handed out.
The winners were: Early Open - Ron Johnson, 1962 Monza
convertible (this car was featured on the cover of the 2002 edition
of the Corvair Underground catalog); Early Closed - Toby Ross, 1960
500 coupe; Forward Control - Don Ralph, 1964 Greenbrier; Late Open -
Bill Wright, 1966 Monza convertible (this is the 2004 CORSA
Convention raffle car); Late Closed - Robert Van Singel, 1969 Monza
coupe. We even awarded a hard luck award this year to Don Hurr
because the engine in his Rampside gave out on the way to the show.
By the way, the Red Barns Spectacular is an
all-makes car show and the Corvair was the marque that had the most
representation!
