Here is the obituary for our former Corvairs of New Mexico sponsor
ED BLACK from Ed Black Chevrolet
Ed Black, age 85 passed away August 15, 2002. He was
born April 4, 1917 in Hamlin, West Virginia to the late Albert and June (Atkins)
Black. He moved to Albuquerque in 1926. He is survived by two daughters, Sally
Black and her husband, Frank Ruscitti of Phoenix and Amy Gayle Black of
Albuquerque; one son, Dr Randy Black and his wife Renee Black of Albuquerque;
three granddaughters, Lindsey, Nicole and Riva Black; two sisters, Gladys Smart
and Alta Briscoe, both of Albuquerque. He was preceded in death by his brother,
Albert; and sister, Jan. He was blessed to have a very large extended family
most of which still call New Mexico home. He was a member of Immaculate
Conception Catholic Church. Ed Black had a long and committed history in New
Mexico. In World War II he joined the Army Air Corps, was stationed in England,
and proudly participated in the glider assault of Europe. He returned to
Albuquerque to start a long and distinguished career in the automobile business.
As owner of Ed Black Chevrolet he garnered many honors including the Presidency
of both the National Auto Dealers Association and the NMADA. One of his proudest
moments was being chosen Time-Life?s Auto Dealer of the Year for 1965. His
commitment to the city of Albuquerque and the University of New Mexico rivalled
his business achievements. A past City Commissioner, president of The United
Way, and a member of the Airport Advisory Board are but a few of his endeavours.
The University of New Mexico held a special place in his heart. As a member of
the UNM football team which played in the Sun Bowl in El Paso in 1939, he never
failed to have season tickets in both football and basketball, was a Lobo Club
Member and a supporter of the Anderson School of Business. Other cherished
Albuquerque activities included membership in the Albuquerque Rotary Club, the
Albuquerque Country Club and in later years the"Gizmos" on Mondays. His full
life included being an avid deep-sea fisherman, pilot, photographer, golfer,
gardener and outdoor grill master. Most importantly to him was being able to
explore the world with all of his immediate family. Wonderful journeys with him
to Hawaii, Mexico, the Caribbean, Europe and South America enriched our lives.
It would be remiss not to thank the exceptionally caring staff of St. Josephs
Oncology, Radiology, Rehab facility and Vista Care. Their interest in him and
caring for his needs eased his transition. In death he joins his wife, Loretto
Harrison Black, on what would have been their 55th anniversary. Visitations will
be held Monday, August 19, 2002 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Strong-Thorne
Mortuary, 1100 Coal Ave. S.E. Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, August 20, 2002
at 10:00 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Church. Interment will follow at the
Sunset Memorial Park, Edith & Menual.
