Corvair Rampside Toy Kennel Truck
Recently, I acquired a Corvair Rampside Toy Kennel Truck from Jon Peters, the proprietor of Jon’s Toy Shop in California. Jon specializes in Corvair toys and advertises on the CORSA Website. I discovered him on eBay where his handle is “tallguy.” Jon is also a collector of 1:1 scale Corvair vehicles and owns 9 or 10 of them. I had lost the bidding on one toy kennel truck he had for sale because the price went into the stratosphere. These days there is a bidder for Corvair toys on eBay who seems to have unlimited funds and once this person joins the bidding it’s all over for everyone else. Jon and I had exchanged a number of emails and he promised that the next time he had a kennel truck he would give me an opportunity to purchase it before he put it up for bid. True to his word, about a month later he emailed me to say that he had found another truck and was able to put it together with a full set of doggies. His price was reasonable too so I sent him a PayPal payment right away.
The kennel truck and all of its parts are made of plastic except for the steel axles and hubcaps. It is about 5” wide, 5” tall, and 11” long, making it a fairly large toy. The wheels are made of hard plastic but the rest is soft “play-proof” plastic. Most of the body is a light turquoise color while the cab and other parts are white. There are six kennel compartments on each side for a total of twelve. The kennel unit is removable and snaps into place in the bed. The ramp on the right side is functional and the clear plastic lid covering the kennel units lifts up on each side so that the plastic dogs can be placed in the kennel. Each of the twelve dogs is different and they are made of excellent plastic castings. There is an adhesive label on each side of the truck that reads “Andy Gard Kennels.” I have been told that Andy Gard is the name of the toy brand but I have no confirmation that this is true. The only thing I can find is “Made in U.S.A.” cast in the plastic under the seat in the cab. I consider this truck to be one of my best Corvair toy finds and it is a wonderful addition to my collection. Jon Peters can be reached at 760-749-9014 or email: 1tallguy@att.net
