What
should I expect if I register for an NECC event?
A typical NECC event consists of time
trials at the track and a car show at a nearby hotel. The time trials
and car show take place on two consecutive days so drivers can
participate in both events. Often, the show occurs on the day before
the track event, rather than the day after, but the sequence of events
presented below is typical.
Day
1: Time Trials. Approx. 7 AM to 5 PM.
1. Registration. Drivers fill out
necessary forms and pay required entry fees. Drivers are assigned to
one of three practice groups, based on their cars and experience. At
tracks where electronic timing is available, drivers rent and install
transponders on their cars.
2. Tech Inspection. All cars must pass
tech inspection. Seat belts required for all cars and roll bars
required for all convertibles. Mufflers required at some tracks.
Current Snell-rated helmets required for all track events.
3. Drivers Meeting. A review of track
rules, flagging and driver protocol.
4. Practice Sessions. Cars are allowed
onto the track for practice, one group at a time. After one or two
rounds of group sessions, any driver can practice at any time until
timings begin. No passing ever permitted, except on straight-aways.
5. Official Timed Laps. Timings begin
later in the afternoon. Each car gets 1 warm-up lap, 2 timed laps & 1
cool-down lap. During the timings, only two or three cars are allowed
on the track at any given moment. After timed laps, drivers return
transponders (where applicable).
Day
2: Car Show. Approx. 9 AM to 3 PM.
1. Registration. Car owners fill out
necessary forms & pay required entry fees.
2. Judging. Concours cars are examined
for paint, chrome, glass, undercarriage, interior, trunk and engine.
Wash 'n Show entries are judged simply on the basis of external
appearance.
