Painting a Corvair in 2004, by Bob Marlow

Coming back together!  This freshly painted Corvair 500 coupe is getting ready for the show circuit!

Continued from previous page.  Once the paint had been buffed, the car was ready for cleanup and reassembly.  Despite our best efforts at masking, a little over-spray had made its way to a few suspension components and the muffler, so things such as those needed to be cleaned.  The doorjambs and the like needed to be detailed.

In photo #11, almost all the trim is back on the car, but the headlight assemblies have been removed for restoration since they received an inappropriate blast of blue during the painting process.

Our next set of photos, shown below, shows the Corvair finished, assembled, and ready for the road.  The car is a "500" model, the bottom of the Corvair model range, so it is equipped with very little trim, simple hub caps, and not much else. But the dings, dents and scratches are all gone, and a beautiful new "base coat/clear coat" finish is on the car.  Because of their styling, Corvairs don't need to be festooned with chrome to look good, and Bob's Corvair 500 proves it!  (The End).

Some photos of Bob's Corvair, with new paint.  Three of these photos were taken at the CORSA Convention in Lexington, KY in June 2004.  The rear 3/4 view photo was taken on the show field. The car was entered in the "Car Display," Late Closed class. The front view, with the door open, was taken on line waiting for the Road Rally to begin. The car garnered MANY compliments during the convention. People have a soft spot for the "plain jane" 500 model!
