NJACE TECH SESSION - ENGINE REBUILD - DAY 1 OF 2.

In 2011, we built a spare engine for Ken Schifftner's Corvair.   Here are photos from the first day's work - November 6.

The project begins! Parts laid out, waiting for assembly.

One half of Ken's Corvair crankcase. So clean!

One of two Corvair cylinder heads.

Brian O'Neill explains how to index the camshaft to the crankshaft.

Bearing shells, awaiting installation.

Installing the crankshaft in one half of the crankcase.

Indexing the cam.

Camshaft and crankshaft in alignment. Marker pen comes in handy!

Installing rear cover studs.

Fitting the crankcase halves together.

Inserting crankcase bolts. They hold the halves together.

Positioning the crankcase on blocks for further assembly.

Screwing the nuts onto the crankcase bolts.

Crankcase is now bolted together, but bolts need to be torqued.

Brian marks the bolts to denote the sequence of torquing them.

Using a torque wrench to tighten the crankcase bolts.

Lots of work with the torque wrench!

Inserting the front main seal in the bell housing.

Banging the seal in place - gently!

Lube the spring ring in the front main seal.

Brian O'Neill's arm....

Positioning the bellhousing to crankcase gasket.

Positioning the bellhousing on the crankcase.

Bolting the bellhousing to the crank case.

That's right - no lock washers on the bottom bolts! Or else interference will occur!

Getting ready to put the block on an engine stand.

Installing the engine stand attachment to the crankcase.

Roberta assists Brian in putting the crankcase on the engine stand.

Crankcase oil pickup. Oh, this was nasty to fit! But we made it work!
