EVENTS

 

The 2004 Corvair Society of America National Convention was held  June 15th  through the 19th  in Lexington Kentucky. There were twelve V8's in attendance, six front end conversions, one rear engine and five mid engine conversions.

In the auto cross Jay Dover won Specialty 1, Al Kidd won Street Modified, and Russ Brandenburg placed second in Street Modified. Rick Norris won in his class in the Concours d'Elegance and Frank Parker won Engineering in the car display.

There were 43 people in attendance at the V8 Registry meeting. Cal Clark gave a report on the remaining Crown parts. Plaques were presented to the ten year members, they will be presented to each member on their 10th anniversary. Frank Parker spoke to the group and listed some helpful web sites.

Archibald Evans displayed his transaxle kits and other items in the vendor room.


The 2003 Corvair Society of America National Convention was held in Carlisle Pennsylvania. There were five V8's in attendance.

There were 40 people in attendance at the V8 Registry meeting. Cal Clark gave a report on the remaining Crown parts and other information. Jay Dover spoke about his conversion and how easy it was to put the wagon on the Malibu chassis. Frank Parker spoke about his car and his experiences in racing. Frank is the Electrical Engineer on the C5 Corvette race team and has a Northstar powered V8 Vair.

Rick Norris drove his V8 Vair at the Summit Point Raceway in the NECC timed track event on the Monday before the convention, then scored a 97.59 in the Concour keeping the car in the Gold Senior Division.


The 2002 Corvair Society of America National Convention was held in Flagstaff AZ. There were 10 V8's in the show. Six V8's participated in the autocross. FTD was once more Harlan Colburn Jr. and his roadster. No cones were hit by any V8's in the autocross. There were about 50 in attendance at the V8 Registry meeting. Cal Clark gave a report on Crown parts still available. Chris Wills spoke about his adapter for a big car 4-speed to a Corvair rear end that he sells through Clark's Corvair Parts. Archibald Evans brought two complete quick change rear ends which he is developing for V8 Vairs.


The 2001 Corvair Society of America National Convention was held in St. Charles IL, just outside of Chicago. There were 9 V8's and 1 V6. Five cars participated in the Auto Cross with FTD going again to Harlan Colburn Jr. in his roadster.

Fred Bachrodat spoke at the V8 Registry meeting. Fred is the first person to put a big car powerglide automatic transmission in a Corvair. Al Kidd gave an entertaining presentation on Jay Dover's Lakewood Wagon conversion mated to an Olds Cutlass Chassis.


The 2000 Corvair Society of America National Convention was held in Daytona Fl.  There were 4 V8's attending. Jay Dover as usual was there with his Lakewood V8 along with Ted Fahrenthold with his beautiful 1966 Monza coupe with a Crown conversion and 350 Chevy small block power. Rick Norris debuted his 1966 Monza coupe Crown conversion after six years of working on it. Ken Arnold showed up with his 1963 Rampside on 1984 Corvette suspension and a 305 Chevy small block amidships with automatic transmission.

There were 22 people at the V8 Registry meeting which was hosted by Rick Norris.


The 1999 Corvair Society of America National Convention was held at Lake Tahoe. There were 10 V8's and one outrageous V12 Jaguar powered front engine Corvair! By far this was the biggest turn out of V8's anywhere anytime! The West Coast boys turned out in force. In the Autocross there were 5 V8's.

There were 38 people at the V8 Registry meeting.  Discussions were held on the possibility of putting the five speed in the V8 and on which cooling system to use and how to set up your radiator.


The 1998 Corvair Society of America National Convention was held in St Louis MO, with  four V8's in attendance. , Russ Brandenburg, Harlan Colburn Jr., Jay Dover and Al Kidd. This year there was a timed track event held at the Gateway International Raceway road course. Harlan was the only V8 in the competition and as usual, he took fastest time of day. The V8 could really stretch out on the straight away. There was 28 people at the V8 Registry meeting and several speakers including Frank Parker who is building a Northstar Cadillac powered V8 Vair took the podium. The main subject was cooling the V8 Vair.

At the autocross Seth Emerson was on hand to co drive Harlan's roadster but this time he did not beat the owners time. However, Harlan did beat everybody and again won the coveted Yenko award for fastest time of the day.

 


The 1997 Corvair Society of America National Convention was held in Lake Placid NY. This event was noteworthy as Ted Trevor, the father of the Crown Corv-8 conversion kit unexpectedly showed up during the V8 meeting. He drove down from his home in Vermont in his V8 Vair. He was still in the process of rebuilding this Corvair using most of the original parts from the first V8 he built.

At the V8 Registry meeting Ted spoke about how he designed the V8 Corvair and a short history about Crown Engineering. Ted's appearance at the convention was a surprise as no one knew he was coming. It was a real treat to meet him. Jay Dover and his dad Tom were there with his primered V8 Vair and both he and Ted ran in the autocross. Unfortunately, during Tom's run the input shaft let go. That's racing as they say.


The 1996 Corvair Society of America National Convention was held in Albuquerque NM. At the autocross Harlan Colburn Jr. drove his V8 Corvair roadster to fast time of day winning the Yenko award. Fred Bachrodt co drove Harlan's car but couldn't quite beat the owner.

 


The 1996 Corvair Society Mid Ohio Mini Convention was held in Columbus OH. There was no formal meeting held at this event. Jay Dover from Canada was the only V8 in attendance, all the way from Ontario, Canada! He and his late father, Tom made some exciting runs on the tight autocross course. A 180 spin was executed by Tom! He was not the only one.


The 1995 Corvair Society of America National Convention was held in Dallas, TX. Larry Rollow presided over the V8 meeting where there were twenty attendees. The V8 cars at the convention were Larry Rollow's 66 Monza coupe with a 455 Toronado Mid Engineering setup and Harlan Colburn Jr. with his 66 roadster powered by a 383 Chevy small block and a Crown conversion.  An interesting side note here. Seth Emerson, owner of a 66 Monza with a 262 Chevy V6 for power co drove Harlan Jr.'s roadster in the autocross and beat him by 3 seconds!


 1994 The First Meeting of  The V8 Registry was held July 27,1994 in Williamsburg VA. at the annual convention. There were 29 people present at the V8 meeting which was presided over by Russ Brandenburg who is the creator of the V8 Registry. Cars in attendance were, Allen Bristow with his 65 Corsa convertible Kelmark conversion with a 350 Chevy small block, Jay Dover with his 67 500 coupe Crown conversion with a 307 Chevy small block and Ron Thomas with his 66 Corsa coupe with a Crown conversion running a 4.6 liter Chevy V6. Unfortunately, Ron's car was rear ended by an inattentive vacationer during the rally and was totaled. No injuries were incurred except some pride. we even had a member from Austria, Gerold Eckl. He does own a V8 Corvair.
