1961 Lakewood Frame Under Conversion

Jay is no stranger to V8 powered Corvairs. For many years he successfully campaigned his Crown mid-engine 1967 model 500 coupe with its distinctive three toned gray and black primer successfully in autocross competition at home and at many CORSA national conventions. 1967 Model 500

Jay's Lakewood is a rare Canadian built version fitted to a 1978 Malibu frame, which he says was the first one to prove that Corvairs can be fitted to 1977-88 GM A or G body frames. As Jay puts it, for people who don't like the noise and heat from riding around in the engine compartment as you do in a mid-engine conversion, it's an excellent choice for a V8 powered Corvair. 1961 Lakewood Front View

Besides being a comfortable all weather cruiser, it has proven to be fast at the track. At its first outing, the 2000 National Convention in Daytona Beach FL, Jay managed to trash the competition in the Street Mod class. This was accomplished running on four tires pulled from a dumpster, none of which matched. Lakewood in Autocross The total investment in this "Rat Rod" build up was $2100 and that included the cost of both the Lakewood and the Malibu! Jay says it's been the most enjoyable, rewarding and all around fun Corvair he's ever owned. Side View

Paint and body consist of Tremclad red applied by "Rattle Can" and some wheel well clearance performed with a Saws All and left unfinished. Rear and Side View There is also a nice round hole in the trunk lid Hole for Air Cleaner for the chrome air cleaner to protrude through.

No radio, no weather stripping and no worries about where you park it! This car lives outside and is driven daily.

The interior is brush painted with no carpet and a ripped headliner.

The engine is a bone stock clapped out and leaky Chevy 305  Engine making around 100 HP, more than enough to haze the hides as it were. Burn Out

An automatic transmission running through a set of 2.56 posi rear gears with overdrive provides winter traction and a nice 75 MPH cruising speed.

The suspension remains stock with power steering and power disc brakes off the old Malibu.
