1965 Monza- Mid
Engine Conversion
Nader's worst nightmare as the caption says,
this is Charlie Friend's version of a land speed car.
The most noticeable feature about the car is the
chopped top and increased rake of the windshield for less wind
resistance. The drip rails have been shaved also. The usual tricks to
make it light such as a fiberglass hood and plastic windows have been
employed. A full roll cage and five point belts satisfy the safety regulations.
Charlie has been modifying the Vair since 1972 when
he bought it with the idea of installing a Crown kit. It sits on C4
Corvette suspension. It now has a 406 Chevy V8, with 11 to 1
aluminum heads and a 750 Holley carb. The transaxle is now from a 930
Porsche with relocated pickup points anchored with rod ends or
polyurethane. This combination along with 2500 pound weight has been
clocked at 166 MPH. His goal is to be in the 200 MPH club.
The picture and information was gleaned from the
December 2000 issue of Grassroots Motorsports Magazine. If anyone has
any other current information or pictures we would like to post it.
