1966 Rear Engine Conversion
Jim's V8 Vair is out of the ordinary for V8
conversions as its engine is in the original Corvair location.
Although not the only one in this configuration, Jim's is very well
done.
Outside the car looks factory stock
with the exception of the Camaro Rally wheels and the clever positioning
of a stock looking Ford 260 V8 emblem
on the deck lid.
The interior has the Corsa dash
with extra oil pressure and water temperature gauges along with a
steering wheel from an Oldsmobile. The original rear seat is in place
also.
The engine is
an early 60's aluminum Oldsmobile 215 C.I. with a reverse rotation kit
installed. The crank is from a 300 Buick
with
stock rods and Chevy 2.8 pistons making it a stroker. The engine
is mounted to the stock Corvair Power glide transmission
via an adapter. A floor shifter controls the power glide.
Cooling is accomplished with a front mounted radiator
and an electric fan mounted to the bottom. Cooling air enters below the
bumper through cut out aided by a Z28 spoiler mounted below.
Jim says this combination works fine.
The wheels are Camaro 15" Rally's
with 205-60-15 tires on the front and 235-60-15 on the rear.
