Corvair Next Generation - 2021 Mini Convention  May 18-22, 2021

Welcome to Springfield Illinois -- and the 2021 CORSA Sanctioned Mini Convention. The information provided on this page should help you plan for the upcoming mini. The mini will be featuring a CORSA Concours d'Elegance and a Road Rally with a visit to the CPF Corvair Musuem. The local tours will be all self-guided with hand out and maps available, possibly even a tour guide if we are lucky. Springfield Illinios is most famous for its ties to Abraham Lincoln. Springfield is home to Lincoln's final resting place, the Lincoln’s tomb, the only home Lincoln owned, his law practice office and the state capitol in which he served before being elected president. Springfield is also on the route of Historic Route 66 and includes numerous locations that were in existence during the Rt 66’s heyday, plus many other sites dedicated to Rt 66. The CPF Corvair Musuem is on that Historic RT 66; how cool is that?

One of our exciting highlighted features this year will be special guest, Mr. William Wynne of FlyCorvair.net who is the authority for converting Corvair engines into aircraft power plants. After all, Corvair engines are aircraft inspired. As part of the Friday road trip, Mr. Wynne and some of his aviator friends will be presenting an Aviation Spectacular event at a nearby airport where Corvair powered airplanes will be on display and; (weather permitting), flight demonstrations will take place. Mr. Wynne will be giving a talk presentation about the history of Corvair flight at the Saturday night banquet. Invite your aviation friends who may find this fun and informative. You don't want to miss out on this. A new feature will be a Corvair-themed Art Show at the hotel for folks who want to bring their original paintings, sketches, renderings, photographs, or three-dimensional artwork pieces made from Corvair parts for others to enjoy. Please bring your own easel or stand for display. We look forward to seeing you there and having a lot of Corvair fun. If you have any questions, contact pcca@corvair.org

COVID- 19 Notes
Illinois is currently operating under the Governor’s Phase 4 for recovery. This means meetings are limited to 50 people or 50% of room capacity; multiple groups may meet in the same facility if in different rooms. Outdoor Activities are also limited to 50 people in a group. Again, multiple groups are permitted if separated. Outdoor seated capacity is limited to 20% of seats. Indoor dining is permitted for paries up to 10 people, tables in the eatery must be spearated by a minimum 6 feet. Take out and delivery is also available. Retail is limited to 50% of capacity. Musuems are limited to 25% capacity with guided tours limited to 50 people in a group.
A very important consideration is that the city of Springfield, which is where the host hotel is located, does have a mask ordinance that carries a fine. Masks must be worn in public (indoor) spaces including hotels, stores, restaurant and bars unless actually eating or drinking. The mask must cover the nose and mouth. Failure to wear a mask could lead to a $50 fine.
What does that all this mean for the Mini: Next generation? Tech sessions and other meetings will be limited to 50 people in the room – once the allotted chairs are filled, no more attendees will be permitted. The museum tours should be under the 50 person limit – more than 20 people in a group is probably too many to really enjoy the tour – PCCA’s tour guides are well informed. Masks will need to be worn indoors at the hotel and the museum. The only exception to the mask rule is at the banquet when you are eating and in the hospitality room while eating. Social distancing is required indoors and outdoors.
The Autocross, Concours and Car Display will be divided into smaller groups to maintain the 50 person limit. For the Autocross, that will mean different run time groups. For the Concours and Car Display, we will need to spread the cars out further apart and possibly in two different areas of the parking lot. Concours may need to limit owners on the show field while the judging is taking place. The rally may also start in two or three segments to meet guidelines.
In the unexpected event that the Mini must be cancelled for 2021, PCCA will be refunded all registration fees. If you still want that t-shirt you ordered, we will need to mail it too you, subtracting the cost for the t-shirt from the refund.

Welcome to Springfield, Illinois and the 2021 Mini Convention - Corvair Next Generation, hosted by the Prairie Capital Corvair Association on May 19-22, 2021. Drive, fly, or float (Abe arrived by canoe in 1831, honest.) to Springfield, Illinois to enjoy a very historic event. The history varies just like our Corvairs - from Abe Lincoln historic sites (Home, Tomb, Old State Capital where the Lincoln’s "House Divided" speech was first heard), to Historic Route 66 which spans from Chicago thru Springfield and then west to California. Plus several historic Native American sites are nearby. Springfield is in the heartland of the Midwest with Midwest hospitality. Our goal is to help you have a grand time in our grand city. By car, you'll find us on Interstate 55 (a.k.a. Route 66 for nostalgia lovers) where it intersects Interstate 72, just 200 miles from Chicago and 100 miles from St. Louis. By plane, Springfield’s Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport is linked with international gateway airports from Chicago O'Hare and Dallas-Fort Worth for daily flights. And, by train, Amtrak offers daily stops in Springfield from Chicago and St. Louis on the Amtrak route between the two larger cities. Greyhound Bus Lines also serves the Springfield area.

Events
Concours d'Elegance

The Concours will be just outside the main entrance to the hotel on the East side of the parking lot. Operations check will be done the day before using the road that drives behind the hotel - between the Crowne Plaza and the Holiday Inn Express. On the east side, just before the parking lot, will be the judges. Rain provision will utilize the hotel entranceway -- yep, got that "covered". Car wash is on the back side of the host hotel, again between it and the Holiday Inn Express.

Road Rally

The Route has not yet been finalized but expect to travel parts of Historic Route 66.

The Route is expected to be mostly flat as central Illinois is mostly flat. The route transverses sections of Historic Route 66. The planners avoided the oil and chip roadways that dot many of the secondary roads but still managed to do the route on two lane roads except for the roads nearest the hotel

Autocross

The Autocross is a low-speed competition where the competitors navigate around a course outlined by orange cones in a parking lot or similar location.

The autocross course is expected to be on-site at the Crowne Plaza utilizing a course similar to that used for the 2016 National Convention. A short fun course.

Guest Speaker (Rally)

One of our exciting highlighted features this year will be special guest speaker, Mr. William Wynne of FlyCorvair.net who is well-known for converting Corvair engines into airplane engines. After all, Corvair engines are aircraft inspired. As a special treat, a Corvair powered airplane will be on display and William may have a surprise to go with it. Invite your aviation friends who may find this very interesting. If you want to learn more about what William does, go to You Tube and search "WW Fly Corvair".

Corvair Display

The Corvair Display will use the same area as the Concours, the parking lot on the East side of the hotel, just outside the main entrance. Car wash is on the back side of the host hotel, again between it and the Holiday Inn Express. Unfortunately, if it rains during this event, we all get a cool shower.

Special Corvair Art Display

Another new feature will be a Corvair-themed Art Show at the hotel for folks who want to bring their original paintings, sketches, renderings, photographs, or three-dimensional artwork pieces made from Corvair parts for others to enjoy. Please bring your own easel or stand for display.

Awards Banquet
Awards Banquet Menu

The menu has not been established yet, in part, because the Hotel Chef is re-working the menu options. However we do expect the main course options to include Prime Rib, Chicken Wellington, and Alaskan Salmon Should be scrumptious.

Awards Banquet Speaker

Mr. William Wynne will be giving a talk presentation about the history of Corvair flight at the Saturday night banquet.

Hospitality

This is the Midwest -- of course we're hospitible. Oh, the Hospitality room will be well stocked with Puzzles and other games to help promote a little camaraderie amongst all our Covair friends. The room is a bit out of the way on the 12th floor, but it is very spacious and overlooks the parking lot where all the Corvairs and Corvair outdoor vendors will be. The view is quite spetacular, for Springfield. Expect the usual refreshments -- light snacks, popcorn, soft drinks, water and coffee -- to be available.

Self Guided Tours
Lincoln Sites Tours

The Lincoln Sites tours will stop at the Springfield Lincoln sites, Home, Tomb, Old State Capital and the Great Western Depot.

The Lincoln Tour will leave the Host hotel, The Crowne Plaza, at 8:30 a.m. each morning. The first stop will be the Great Western Train Depot. The depot is currently privately owned but will be open for our tours. History lesson: the depot is the station where Abraham gave his “Farewell to Springfield” speech when he departed for Washington for his first term as President.

The next stop is Abraham Lincoln’s final resting place in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Lincoln’s Tomb. It is also the final resting place of his wife, Mary Todd Lincoln, and three of their four children. Their oldest son, Robert Todd Lincoln, is buried at Arlington National Cemetery. If time permits, the tour bus will also pass the three war memorials on the other side of Oak Ridge Cemetery. They commemorate the Illinois lives lost in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. While visiting Lincoln’s Tomb, remember to rub Lincoln’s nose on the bust of Lincoln in front of the Tomb for good luck. No guarantees, however! The nose rub is a tradition that is older than our Corvairs.

After the visit to the Tomb, the group will be provided lunch as part of the tour package. The location and menu may vary but it will be home-style delicious and include tea, coffee or water.

After lunch – we head downtown to the Lincoln Home National Historic site, allowing a couple of hours to tour the home and neighborhood. From there, a short trip to the Illinois State Capitol is planned. With luck, you did rub Abe’s nose, right? The Old State Capitol, where Lincoln gave his "House Divided Speech" will be the capitol we get to tour. This building is located on the downtown square. Nearby is the under restoration Lincoln-Herndon Law Office. Currently, both historic sites are closed because of Illinois’ budget situation, but we are wishful that will change by the convention.

An alternative driving “shopping” tour for the quilting and craft-minded convention attendees is also in the works. Check the hospitality room for a sign up sheet.
Several options for self driving tours include following: Historic Route 66, Other historic sites include the Dana Thomas house, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, the Clayville Historic Site, which has a stage coach stop dating to the 1850s. The inn is the oldest brick building in the area. The Chatham Railroad Museum, a small railroad museum on Route 66 which through special arrangements, will be open Thursday.
And don't forget a visit to the New Salem State Historic Site near Petersburg, Illinois. This is where Abe Lincoln first landed in Illinois serving as surveyor, post master and partner in the local store.
Route 66

Historic Route 66 - original Brick road. The trolley tours are not expected to follow Route 66, but that does't mean you can't tour them on your own. The Economy Run is expected to travel on this brick road portion of Route 66.

Local Eateries and Entertainment Options
Close to the host hotel

The area around the hotel offers many restaurant choices, most within walking distance. The list includes local favorites to virtually all the major chains: McDonalds, Red Lobster, Hooters, IHOP, Bob Evans, Galinas (pizza), Panera Bread, Quiznos, Arby’s, Long John Silver’s, Cancun (Mexican), La Fiesta (Mexican), Smokey Bones (BBQ), Outback Steakhouse, Applebees, and Steak-n-Shake. A block south is a strip shopping center which includes Arby’s, Panera and McDonalds, local stores and a bar and grille with good food at inexpensive prices. The center also has an eight screen movie theatre. Now, a food alert, if your diet will permit it, try the signature dish of Springfield, the Horseshoe. The basic dish varies by eatery but consists of toasted bread topped with a meat of your choice, smothered with a creamy cheese sauce and then topped with fries (or hash browns if it’s a breakfast shoe). Since they are high in calories, a nice long walk visiting the local sites may be in order afterwards.

Springfield also has four live theater locations including New Salem’s Theatre in the Park, Hoogland Center for the Arts, the University of Illinois Springfield’s Sangamon Auditorium, and the Muni Opera. The first and last are both outdoor theaters. Nearby is the Route 66 Drive-in, which once was on Route 66 before the drive-in relocated. Not far from the host hotel is Lincoln Memorial Gardens and the Henson Robinson Zoo, both are located around Lake Springfield just south of the hotel. The Thomas Rees Memorial Carrillon and the Botanical Gardens are located in Washington Park on the west side of Springfield.
